There’s plenty of excitement flowing around the halls of the D23 Expo this year, and a lot of that has to do with the highly anticipated Star Wars land coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts in 2019. Well, today Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, shared brand new details on the immersive experiences guests will soon be able to enjoy in the parks — including the official name.
The official name for the Star Wars-themed lands will be “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.”
Disney has provided a video flyover of a model for what the land will look like. It resembles a remote trading port on the edge of wild space, “where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life – and where guests will find themselves in the middle of the action.” That last bit — the part about guests finding themselves in the middle of the action — is a similar approach Disney is taking with their new Star Wars-themed Resort.
Two Major Attractions
As for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, there are two major attractions planned — both putting guests in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance. One attraction will make you feel like you’re on a Star Destroyer inside a hangar bay. According to Disney, it’s “built on a scale we’ve never done before.”
The second attraction gives guests the opportunity to fly the Millenium Falcon, piloting the ship, shooting blasters, or preparing for hyperspace — all while completing a critical mission. It appears the attraction will have some pretty high stakes, as your performance could affect your experience within the ride, or possibly the park itself. If you perform well, you may earn extra galactic credits; but, if you bring the ship back banged up it could put you on the list of a bounty hunter. Disney teases: “End up on Harkos’s list and you may face a problem if you show up at the local cantina!”
Of course, familiar faces from the Star Wars universe will be found within the land, including BB-8, Chewbacca, members of the First Order, and a character fans of the original Star Tours may remember fondly — Rex. The troublesome droid will take on a new role as the DJ at the cantina.
Speaking of cantina, there will be uniquely themed items available like blue milk. And, of course, a gift shop.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is set to open in 2019, first at the Disneyland Resort and later in the year at the Walt Disney World Resort.
