It’s hard to believe that after all these years, Disney World has not had a Mickey-themed ride-through attraction. Well, that’s about to change. The company announced today during the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts presentation at D23 Expo 2017 a new attraction — Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway — featuring international icon Mickey Mouse.

According to Disney, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will see riders step through the movie screen to join Mickey and friends in the wacky and unpredictable world of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon Short.

“On Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, you’ll step throughthe movie screen and join Mickey and his friends like never before. The attraction will put you inside the wacky and unpredictable world of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon Short where you’re the star and anything can happen. This zany out-of-control adventure features surprising twists and turns, dazzling visual effects and mind-boggling transformations that happen before your very eyes.”

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will feature a new story and a new singable attraction theme song as well as a new experience that Disney is calling “2 1/2 D.” Ready for this? NO GLASSES REQUIRED!

Walt Disney Imagineer Kevin Rafferty said teams are inventing new technologies that turn the flat world of a colorful cartoon short into a “dimensional display of amazingness.” That sounds pretty freaking amazing. As someone whose wife can’t really handle 3D, I am incredibly excited for this news.

“This is one of the boldest…most impossible things I’ve ever worked on in almost 40 years of being an Imagineer. And you know what? That’s what I love about it. Well, that, and Mickey,” Kevin said. “This is not going to be a small attraction, it’s going to be game-changing.”

The attraction is inspired by the Mickey Shorts that can be seen on the Disney Channel. What’s more, the actual people who bring you the shorts at Disney Television Animation are partnering with the engineers to help bring the attraction to life.

Ready for the sad part now? The opening of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios means we must say goodbye to another beloved classic — The Great Movie Ride presented by Turner Classic. In order to prepare for the new home of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Disney will be closing The Great Movie Ride on August 13, 2017. So you’ll have until then to relive the greatest movie moments in history.

While it’s incredibly sad to say goodbye to The Great Movie Ride, I can’t wait to experience Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

Disney is also bringing another new ride to Walt Disney World. Shanghai Disneyland’s TRON Lightcycle Power Run  will be coming to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom sometime in 2021.
