Why Star Wars Battlefront 2’s story is being told from the Imperial point of view

Star Wars Battlefront 2 - Iden Versio

One of the biggest surprises with Star Wars Battlefront 2’s campaign is the fact that it’ll be told from the perspective of the Imperials.

“I’ve always been a fan of the Dark Side. The idea of the Imperial perspective is you never really understand who they are as people or how the organization works,” explains game director Mark Thompson in the new behind the story trailer. “How can we distill that and how can we make a story around that?”

In Star Wars Battlefront 2’s campaign, you’ll play as Iden Versio, a young and brave Imperial officer raised under the tutelage of her father, and a natural leader for Inferno Squad. The campaign presumably kicks off just as the second Death Star is destroyed by the Rebels (the end of Return of the Jedi). This cataclysm propels the Inferno Squad into a journey across the galaxy on a quest to restore order and burn the Rebellion to the ground.

As such, the story will address some questions left unanswered by the end of the film. What happened after Return of the Jedi? What happened to the galaxy? What happened to the Empire without an Emperor?

“Iden is presented with an extreme challenge — the destruction of the Death Star 2 and the death of the Empire,” the developers explain.

“What sort of choices would somebody in that situation have to make about who they are and what the galaxy was going to become? And it’s interesting, does that mean now that the Empire has fallen, that they are the underdogs?”

It’s these questions that have inspired EA to tell the story of Battlefront 2 from the point of view of the Empire; but, we could also be in for some twists. The video touches a bit on the family roots of the story, which could provide an interesting wrinkle in the story as far as if Iden remains loyal to the Imperial or not.

On a related note, Disney and Lucasfilm yesterday announced a new novel, Battlefront II: Inferno Squad, which serves as a prequel to Star Wars Battlefront 2’s campaign. Battlefront II: Inferno Squad arrives on July 25th, and is now available for pre-order.

Meanwhile, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is due out on November 17, 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
